- Who are Glasses International?
-
We are a UK based online provider of high quality prescription glasses and sunglasses directly to the customers worldwide.
High Street opticians in most countries have overpriced their products for years, making high profits on each pair of glasses. New product development in recent years has resulted in spectacle lenses being thinner, lighter and flatter, with significantly improved coatings. These improvements have helped opticians persuade customers to upgrade their spectacles - but at a price!
Glasses International are here to help by providing the same products as an average High Street optician but up to 70% cheaper. Our aim is to make life easier and more convenient for people who wear glasses and to give them more choice and value for money.
These days eyewear isn't just a medical device, it's also become a desirable fashion accessory. Many people change their frames in the same way as their shoes or clothes, with different colours and styles for different occasions. Did you know that Parisian woman own, on average, 7 different pairs of spectacles? However, some people still hesitate to buy more than one pair of glasses because of the prohibitive cost.
We believe that everyone deserves to have as many pairs of glasses as they desire - a couple of understated frames for work and a couple of fashionable ones for going out, perhaps? Or you may be one of those people who keeps forgetting their glasses - so why not have one pair at home, one in the car and another one at work? At these prices, why not?
If the concept of buying glasses online is new to you, you're in for a great surprise, and you're going to save a lot of money, too! Try it and you'll never look back - that we can promise!

- Why are your prices so competitive?
-
You might be surprised but we use the same materials and laboratories (based in the UK) used by High Street opticians. But because we do not need expensive shop premises, sight-testing equipment, warehouses or large numbers of staff, we are able to drastically reduce our costs - and pass the savings on to you!
We do not offer advice relating to optical issues, we simply make high quality glasses according to the prescription you give to us. And because the prices are so much lower than at the traditional optical store - you can now afford as many pairs as you like!

Well done Mark! - What is your guarantee policy?
-
We believe that like most of our customers, you will be delighted with your new glasses.
However, we feel that our customers' satisfaction is imperative for our success and we also appreciate that buying products online requires a high degree of trust. That is why we offer a 21 day money-back guarantee. If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with your glasses you may return them within 21 days beginning from the date we dispatch your goods for delivery, as stated on your invoice.
When you return your glasses to us you can either receive a full refund or exchange the glasses for another pair. All we ask is that the goods returned are unused, in the original undamaged packaging and complete with the original invoice.
If this is not the case and only some of the original goods are returned, or if it is clear that some of the goods have been used, we reserve the right to proportionately reduce the level of the refund.
***
Additionally, we also offer a 12 month guarantee against any defects or breakages on all frames and lenses.
In the unfortunate event that your glasses are found to be faulty within 12 months we will at our discretion refund, replace or repair your glasses. If the frame that needs replacing is out of stock, we may (with your agreement) suggest an alternative frame of equal or greater value than the original. Please note that this does not cover misuse or damage that is not due to a manufacturing fault.
After 12 months our technicians will be happy to make any necessary repairs for a small charge.
Please contact us before returning any products to us and note that the original invoice must also be returned with the glasses.

All glasses chains are guaranteed against manufacturing defects for 2 years.

- How do I obtain my prescription?
-
By law, every optician is obliged to give you a written copy of your prescription at the end of your eye test.
The optician may well try hard to get you to buy your glasses from their shop but you do not have to do this if you do not wish to. If you have mislaid your prescription simply ask you optician for a copy.
We recommend that you ask your optician to include your pupillary distance on your prescription - this is the distance between the centres of the pupils in each eye and is usually expressed in millimeters. Knowing the exact distance between the customer's eyes helps the optician to ensure that the centre of each lens is aligned exactly with the centre of the customer's pupils. Although we recommend that you ask for this measurement when you have your eye test it isn't a major factor at lower strength prescriptions.
For more information on pupilary distance click here.
- Is it possible to get a free eye test?
-
There are certain circumstances in which you are entitled to a free sight test. For example, the NHS will pay for your eye test if:
- you are 60 years old or over
- you have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- an ophthalmologist has advised you that you're at risk of glaucoma
- you are 40 years old or over, and your mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucomaFor more information go to NHS website www.nhs.uk
- I don't have a current glasses prescription, can I use my contact lenses prescription?
-
No. Contact lenses prescriptions are not the same as prescriptions for spectacles, therefore you need a regular glasses prescription in order to purchase glasses.
- How strong a prescription can you cater for?
-
We can supply spectacles to prescriptions with maximum distance sphere of +/-8.00 dioptres and maximum power of any cylinder +/-4.00 dioptres. Please note that at present we only supply single vision lenses and not biofocals or varifocals.
- What is a pupillary distance (PD), and how do I obtain it?
-
The PD (Pupillary Distance) is the distance between the centres of the pupils in each eye and is usually expressed in millimeters - most adult PD's are between 60-65mm the average being 63mm. Knowing the exact distance between the customer's eyes helps the optician to ensure that the centre of each lens is aligned exactly with the centre of the customer's pupils. Although we recommend that you ask for this measurement when you have your eye test it isn't a major factor at lower strength prescriptions.
Unfortunately, many prescriptions given by High Street opticians do not include a PD measurement. This is sometimes done intentionally to try to ensure that the customer will purchase their glasses from that particular optician rather than getting better value glasses elsewhere, for example from Glasses International.
You can either ask your optician for your PD measurement or alternatively you can ask someone else to help you measure it yourself. Just follow these steps:
- Have the other person face you about arms length away.
- Ask them to place a millimetre ruler over the bridge of your nose.
- Have the other person measure the distance between the centres of your pupils while you look straight ahead - they need to place the 0 over the centre of one pupil in one eye and take the measurement to the centre of the pupil in the other eye.
Please note: it is not possible to get an accurate measurement by looking in the mirror and trying to read the ruler yourself.
If you do not enter the PD measurement we will make your glasses using an average pupillary distance measurement of 63 mm. Whilst using an average pupillary distance measurement works very well for most people, some customers with strong prescriptions (or whose pupillary distance differs significantly from the average) may experience some problems. Although such glasses will not damage or harm the eyes they may cause some discomfort or eye strain.
If you would prefer to include your exact PD measurement with your order you can save your prescription now and log in again later on to enter the exact measurements and proceed with your order.

Your prescription is the most important part of getting your glasses so please take care when entering the details.
Your glasses will be manufactured according to the details you supply so if you have any problems reading your prescription please call us on 0844 35 777 59. SPHERE (SPH)
The Sphere specifies the strength of a lens (and therefore its thickness) required to correct your focus - short sight is corrected by negative Sphere values and long sight is corrected by positive values.
The Sphere value always has a plus (+) or a minus (-) sign in front of it (for example ‘+1.50' or ‘-1.50') or above it - please ensure you pay special attention to this as selecting the wrong sign is the most common mistake customers make. If the Sphere value is negative in one eye, then it is generally negative in the other eye and vice versa. Some opticians may not include the decimal point (for example ‘-150').
There will always be a value for Sphere, even if it is just zero - which can be written on your prescription as 0.00, Pl, Plano or an infinity symbol which looks like a figure ‘8' on its side (∞). If this is the case you should select ‘∞' or ‘Plano' from the drop down menu.
If the vision in one eye is very poor, the word 'balance' or 'bal' may also be written.
CYLINDER (CYL)The Cylinder value determines the strength of the astigmatism correction and it is normally a number between ‘+4.00' and ‘-4.00'. Astigmatism is where the eye loses its spherical shape and becomes more like a rugby ball. This just means that the eye has difficulty focusing at certain angles.
The Cylinder value always has a plus (+) or a minus (-) sign in front of it (for example ‘+1.50' or ‘-1.50') or above it - please ensure you pay special attention to this as selecting the wrong sign is the most common mistake customers make. Some opticians may not include the decimal point (for example ‘-150'). If the Cylinder value is negative in one eye, then it is generally negative in the other eye and vice versa.
If the optician has put a ‘DS' (this can sometimes be misread as O5) or has not entered anything in there, it simply means that there is no astigmatism. If this is the case you can either leave this box blank, or select ‘DS' in the drop down menu.
AXIS (AXI)The Axis value refers to the angle of the astigmatism correction and it is just a number on its own between 0-180. As a rule, if you have a Cylinder reading on your prescription then you MUST also have an Axis reading. If there is no Cylinder on the prescription however, there will also be no Axis - so leave it blank.
NEAR ADDITION (NEAR ADD) or INTERMEDIATE ADDITION (INTER ADD)Your optician may have written ‘ADD' or ‘INTER ADD' somewhere on your prescription for reading or intermediate glasses - it will always be a plus (+) figure (for example ‘+1.75').
Near addition refers to your prescription required to correct near vision, usually for reading. Intermediate addition refers to your prescription required to correct intermediate vision, for example for computer use or reading music while playing an instrument.
Opticians can write this anywhere on your prescription, sometimes once (for both eyes), and sometimes twice (once for each eye). If nothing has been entered then leave this box blank.
PRISM and BASEPrisms are normally used in spectacles when people have a slight squint or lazy eye. If you have any information in the Prism column on your prescription, you should also have some information in the Base column. If that is the case, please enter this information correctly into the 'any extra information' box and we will do our best to accommodate your prescription. If there is an additional charge we will contact you first.
- How do I place an order with you?
-
Ordering glasses on our website is easy and safe. Take your time browsing through our wide selection of frames, try them on in our online ‘fitting room' or store them in your basket for later. Once you have decided on your frames and lenses simply enter your details and your prescription information and pay using a debit or a credit card - that's it!
All you need to place an order is a copy of your latest prescription. If you do not currently have a prescription or your last eye test was more than 2 years ago (or more than 1 year ago if you are 70 years old or over) you can still browse through our selection of frames and lenses now, and come back to our website to place an order later on.
- How do I know which frames will suit me?
-
Here are some guidelines to help you choose a frame style and colour that looks good on your face:
- work out your face shape to find the best frame styles - the frame shape should contrast with your face shape and not mirror it
- the frame size should be in scale with your face
- consider your complexion (skin tone) to find the best frame colours - the frame colour should compliment your complexion and not contrast it
Remember though, these are not rules cast in stone - they are just guidelines. If you want to make a fashion statement and stand out from the crowd, just throw the rule book out and go for it!
Face shape
Face shapes can change over time due to a number of factors such as age, weight gain/loss and even a hair style. Listed below are the most common shapes. It is possible that your face may not fit exactly into any one category and may be a combination of shapes. Most people, however, will fit into one of the major categories which include:
OVAL

Oval is the most common face shape, it is generally balanced in proportion but is longer than it is wide. Slightly narrower at the jaw line than at the temples, with a gently rounded hairline.
Try
Frames which are as wide as the broadest part of your face. Rounded and rectangular frames will suit this face.Avoid
Small or large oval shaped frames that mirror the shape of your face.ROUND

Round face has curved lines, soft features and rounded jaw line and hairline. The width and length are usually in almost equal proportions.
Try
To make your face appear thinner and longer, try angular frames such as elongated ovals or rectangles and frames that are wider than they are deep.Avoid
Small or large round frames that mirror the shape of your face.SQUARE

Square face has strong distinctive jawbones and usually an equally square hairline. Broad forehead with the width and length in almost equal proportions.
Try
Frames that are narrow and wider such as ovals and soft rectangular shapes will help soften your features. Frames with a high side position will add length to your face.Avoid
Square styles and any frames that are wider than your face.RECTANGULAR

Long and slender, rectangular face is longer than it is wide with strong chin and defined cheekbones.
Try
Larger oval frames that extend beyond the temple with the sides positioned in the middle of the frame will make your face appear shorter and more balanced.Avoid
Small rectangular styles as they will make your face appear longer.HEART / BASE-UP TRIANGLE

Wider forehead that narrows gradually to a slightly pointed or rounded chin.
Try
Rectangular shapes in light or rimless frames will balance your face.Avoid
Frames which are heavy and wide at the top.BASE-DOWN TRIANGLE

This face has a dominant jaw line that tapers or narrows toward the cheeks and temples.
Try
Frames heavily accented with colour and detailing on the top half or cat's-eye shapes. Semi rimless frames are a good choice.Avoid
Frames heavily accented with colour and detailing on the bottom half.DIAMOND

Not as common as other face shapes, this face shape is more angular. It is widest at the temples with wide cheeks, and narrow forehead and jaw line.
Try
Oval and cat's-eye frames will soften the angles of your cheekbones. Try frames that have detailing or distinctive brow lines. All rimless glasses are also a good choice.Avoid
Rectangular and round shaped frames.Complexion
Skin tone is the primary element in determining colouring. Most people have either a cool (blue-based), warm (yellow-based) or dark skin colouring. As a rule, everyone looks best in his or her own colour base and so frame colour that complements your personal colouring will generally look better.
Cool Complexion
Choose lightweight metal frames, rimless and semi-rimless styles which all suit cool complexions, or try those with a hint of colour such as amber, silver, rose/pink, blue, or lilac shades. Styles with a side pattern will create impact.Warm Complexion
Choose silver, gold or clear frames as well as copper, red, orange, bronze, yellow and green shades.Dark complexion
All metallic frames in copper, bronze, silver, gun or black suit dark skins and amber works well too. Be careful with bright colours for dark complexions unless you want to make an impact.***
If you are still not sure about what frames might suit you, visit our fitting room where you can try most of our frames online by uploading a photograph of yourself from your computer. That way you can see what you will look like in a range of different styles and experiment with various shapes and colours.

> browse PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES now < - How do I know if the frame is going to be the right size for me?
-
The best way to make sure your new glasses will fit you well is to order a similar size to a comfortable pair of glasses that you already have.
You can usually read these measurements off your present frames - on the inside arm of most frames (arms are the parts that hook over the ears) there is a set of three numbers which are the frame's measurements in millimetres, i.e. 51-18-135. The first number is lens diameter, the second number is the bridge width, and the third number is the arm length. If your glasses do not have these measurements, you can easily check them yourself using a ruler.
While the lens diameter is a matter of choice, the bridge width and arm length will determine the actual fit. They do not need to be exactly the same, but the more similar the measurements are to your existing pair, the more comfortable the fit of your new glasses will be.
Please note: unlike with other styles, with all RIMLESS GLASSES, the lens diameter (or lens width) can be increased or decreased as required.
You can find the measurements for each pair of frames on our website just below its main picture.
Alternatively, just enter your existing frame sizes in the boxes below to find a pair with the closest fit: - How do I use the online fitting room?

> click here to view all GLASSES frames < - Can I send my own glasses frame to be re-glazed?
-
Unfortunately we do not offer re-glazing service. This is because older frames can become brittle over time which may increase the likelihood of them being damaged during re-glazing.
- What type of glasses do you sell?
-
At present we only supply single vision lenses and not bifocals or varifocals.
Single vision means that the lens only contains one prescription so it is designed for best vision at one specific distance. Single vision lenses have the same focal power throughout and can be used to correct short sightedness, long sightedness, astigmatism, or a combination of these.
Most people who wear glasses before the age of 45 only need single vision lenses fitted into their glasses. It is common to use two different pairs of spectacles, each with single vision lenses, for example one pair just for reading, and another one for looking at things at a distance.
Please note that we can supply spectacles for prescriptions with maximum distance sphere of +/- 8.00 dioptres and maximum power of any cylinder +/- 4.00 dioptres.
> click here to view all GLASSES frames < - What sort of lenses do you offer?
-
We can supply the following single vision lenses:
Standard (1.5 index)
Made from CR39 resin (usually called 'plastic') they are ideal for most single vision prescriptions because they are much lighter and considerably more impact resistant than glass lenses. They are the most popular optical lenses and are also used by practically all High Street opticians. Lenses made from CR39 plastic also make great prescription sunglasses as they are easy to tint.HIGH INDEX LENSES
A high index lens is one which can be made thinner in the same power. High index lenses have become increasingly popular as they are flatter, thinner and lighter than standard lenses and they do not distort the appearance of the eye. If you are a mid to high prescription wearer (and particularly if you selected a delicate frame) then we would recommend thinner lenses made of special higher index material as they will make your glasses more cosmetically appealing. As a rule, the higher the prescription, the bigger the impact higher index lenses will have on your appearance. There are three options available:
- Thin & light (1.6 index)
Recommended if your prescription is above +/-3.00.
Up to 30% thinner than standard lenses, depending on prescription.
Scratch resistant coating is included at no extra charge.
- Extra thin & light (1.67 index)
Recommended if your prescription is above +/-4.00.
Up to 40% thinner than standard lenses, depending on prescription.
Scratch resistant and anti-reflection coatings are included at no extra charge. - Super thin & light (1.74 index)
Recommended if your prescription is above +/-6.00.
One of the thinnest optical plastic lenses available on the market today - up to 45% thinner than standard lenses, depending on prescription.
Scratch resistant, anti-reflection and UV400 protective coatings are all included at no extra charge.
Polycarbonate lenses (1.59 index)
Up to 28% thinner than standard lenses, depending on prescription.Polycarbonate lenses are plastic lenses that are highly impact resistant and as a higher index material are also slightly thinner. Because rimless glasses are more fragile, we supply polycarbonate lenses as standard to make your glasses as robust as possible (but you can also choose these lenses for fully rimmed and semi-rimless glasses).
Scratch resistant coating is included at no extra charge.
Sun reactive (photochromic) lenses [brown / grey] (1.5-1.56 index)
Sun reactive (or photochromic) lenses are light sensitive lenses that produce a tint effect on exposure to sunlight and become clear indoors. They protect the eyes indoors as well as outdoors - correcting your vision and ensuring UV protection at the same time. They are ideal for people who regularly have to be inside and outside, or for anyone who doesn't want the inconvenience of carrying around an extra pair of prescription sunglasses. Please note that these lenses are in general not suitable for use as sunglasses while driving, because windscreens tend to absorb the UV light that makes photochromic lenses work.
Scratch resistant coating and UV400 protective coating are included at no extra charge.
Polarised lenses [brown / grey / green] (1.5 index)
Polarised lenses provide maximum protection from reflected glare. They improve visual clarity and therefore help to better perceive contrast and depth of perception. They are very useful for driving, both in sunny and wet conditions. Polarised lenses are especially good for fishing as well as many other outdoor activities including water-sports and golfing.
Scratch resistant coating and UV400 protective coating are included (85% light absorption) at no extra charge. - Thin & light (1.6 index)
- What types of coatings and tints do you offer?
-
We offer a number of lens coatings and tints including:
- scratch resistant coating
No lens material is scratch proof, however, lenses treated with a clear, scratch resistant coating do become more resistant to every day wear and tear. Although the coating does not make the lens 100% scratch proof, it helps to prevent minor scratches that can damage the surface of the lens and therefore it helps to extend the life of your lenses. - anti-reflection coating
Anti-reflection coating comes in the form of an almost invisible green film over the lenses and it improves both the vision and the appearance of the glasses. It dramatically reduces the amount of glare a lens has and therefore it is particularly useful for night time driving or working on a computer. If you have a strong prescription, you can use the anti-reflection coating combined with higher index lenses to make your glasses look and feel as thin as possible. - UV400 protective coating
Although invisible, ultraviolet light can be potentially damaging to our bodies. And although we all know about the damage that exposure to the sun can do to our skin, we often forget about the damage it can do to our eyes. Overexposure to UV light is thought to be a cause of cataracts, retinal damage and other eye problems. UV400 protective coating is a clear coating which helps to protect the eyes from the potentially harmful UV rays.
If you want to create a more unique look, you can do so by choosing one of the fashionable colours available and selecting it as either a tint (where the entire lens is the same colour) or a graduated tint (a gradual fade from dark to light).
And by adding a dark tint and a UV400 protective coating to your glasses, you can easily turn them into your very own, unique SUNGLASSES!
Our tints are defined by their light absorption factor and there are three options available:
- light tint (20% light absorption)
This is a very light 'fashion' tint and is used primarily for cosmetic reasons to enhance a wearer's appearance. - medium tint (50% light absorption)
While not too dark to wear indoors, it gives some protection outdoors (although not in extreme light situations such as midday sun). - dark tint (85% light absorption)
A dark tint is ideal for all bright outdoor conditions and provides maximum protection from the sun especially for those people sensitive to light. We recommend this option for most sunglasses applications.
Sunglasses tint colours available:
- light / medium / dark brown (also available as graduated int)
- light / medium / dark grey (also available as graduated tint)
- light / medium / dark blue
- light / medium / dark greenPlease note: tints are only available with standard (1.5 index) and polycarbonate lenses (1.59 index).
We recommend:For general use:
scratch resistant coatingFor driving & computer work:
scratch resistant coating + anti-reflection coatingFor outdoors & sports:
scratch resistant coating + anti-reflection coating + UV400 protective coating + tint
OR sun reactive (photochromic) lenses
OR polarised lenses - scratch resistant coating
- Do you sell bifocal or varifocal lenses?
-
At present we do not supply bifocal or varifocal glasses because the measurements required are too precise to be accurately supplied via the internet. We are working on ways to overcome this issue and in the meantime we recommend that you buy these from your local optician.
- Do you sell melanin sunglasses?
-
While we are currently not offering melanin sunglasses through the website, we can produce them on demand. Please contact us regarding a price once you've selected your frames.
- What are the postage and packaging costs?
-
We have set out postage and packaging charges for spectacles which apply to any location in the world. These are given below in Sterling (£). For overseas customers, the charge will be the equivalent in whichever currency you choose on our website:
£3.50 for 1 pair
£4.50 for 2 pairs
£5.50 for 3 pairs+Please note:
We offer FREE postage and packaging on all glasses chains. We may sometimes ship multiple-order parcels separately to reduce delays.
- How long will my glasses take to arrive and how will they be delivered?
-
All orders will receive immediate attention and are often processed on the same day. We aim to deliver all orders within 10 days, although as with any mail order company we do ask that you allow up to 28 days for delivery. We must stress this happens very rarely and is mostly dependant on the complexity of the prescription and coatings.
Your glasses will be sent to you 1st Class via standard Royal Mail packet post or AirMail if outside the UK. The glasses' packages fit through most letterboxes, so you should not have to be in to receive them when they arrive.
- What if my frames need adjustment after I receive them?
-
On the whole most frames should fit well although there might be occasions when a small adjustment is necessary to ensure an optimum fitting and comfort. If you still have problems after that, please come back to us.
